So. Work has gone by at an exceptionally slow rate today. Highlights of the day include: a nutella, peanut butter, and banana sandwich, oatmeal cookies courtesy of intern Meghan, and discovering that despite our Web Banking idiosyncrasies, our accounts are still fairly accurate.

I do like my job. Though the reality of my paycheck and wearing those big girl shoes has been quite the wake up call.

I am trying to enjoy life as best I can.

Visits with the boy, reading various mags and books, picture taking, and decorating new apartment seem to keep me happy. I do not feel as intelligent as I did in college. I feel as though I use largely the same vocabulary everyday, and am not stretching my brain with discussing new things. Perhaps I need to meet some active type folks here in the Raleigh. Perhaps if I got cable and watched the news. Wait. Scratch that. The news is awful. I should just get a subscription to some important news bulletin guy via e-mail that I could read every day. Suggestions, people?

It is currently 6:05pm. I am eager to leave the office, go for a nice swim, and perhaps station at myself at a cozy coffee shop and sip on some tea.

Maybe a martini.

I was feeling extremely dumb for a while, too. And so I started to enjoy reading again and I also started keeping up with current events and pop culture and lots of miscellaneous things.

Here are my recommendations for keeping up on stuff:

1. Customize your google homepage, and you can choose from lots of little widgets that include top headlines from the NYTimes, Reuters, etc. You get everything like an RSS feed. It rules.

2. On the NYTimes website, you can subscribe to a bunch of different podcasts for free and it's awesome. Download 'em, put 'em on your ipod in the morning or listen to them at work.

3. Also, the NYTimes gives you the option to subscribe to certain parts of the paper for free online. You have to register an account but that is also free. Currently, I'm subscribed to Headline Stories and Urban Eye, and they are dropped nicely in my inbox every morning for my eventual perusal.

4. Fiction/creative-wise, I'm obsessed with McSweeney's (mcsweeneys.net). I love their quarterly review, and The Believer. Their web magazine is updated pretty much everyday. And, the McSweeney's store serves as a one-stop shop for fiction I love and awesome deals on books and magazines. BEST SITE EVER.

5. Lastly, I read a lot of blogs, mostly in the Gawker Media group, specifically consumerist.com, lifehacker.com, gawker.com, and jezebel.com. They give me a good, snarky dose of pop culture, neat stuff, and other news stories that make me sound smart for "having read it somewhere" on a daily basis. You would also probably enjoy popcandy.com -- it's a tasteful pop culture blog. Blogs definitely keep me up on things that I would have otherwise never paid attention to.

Hope Raleigh's treating you well!
